Single crochet (sc)

The single crochet is the short, dense basic stitch used for toys, bags and edges. In UK patterns it is called double crochet (dc).

  1. Step 1

Put the hook into the next stitch, under both loops at the top.

  2. Step 2

Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have 2 loops on the hook.

  3. × 2
    Step 3

Yarn over again and pull through both loops.

  4. Step 4

One single crochet is done, with 1 loop left on the hook.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the last stitch of the row: the piece gets narrower. Count your stitches at the end of every row.
  • Working into the turning chain: the piece gets wider.
  • Pulling too tight: let the loops be big enough for the hook to slide in.
Good to knowPaste your pattern into the checker: it counts every row and tells you which one is off.
