Gauge

Gauge is how many stitches and rows fit in 10 cm with your yarn, hook and hands. It decides the size of everything you make.

10 cm

Why it matters

Two people with the same yarn and hook can get different sizes, because everyone holds the yarn a little differently. If your stitches are bigger than the pattern’s, your hat comes out too big.

Make a swatch

  • Work a square about 15 × 15 cm in the stitch the pattern uses.
  • Lay it flat without stretching it.
  • Count the stitches across 10 cm, and the rows up 10 cm.

If it doesn’t match

  • More stitches than the pattern: your stitches are small. Use a bigger hook.
  • Fewer stitches than the pattern: your stitches are big. Use a smaller hook.
  • Or keep your hook and let Crochet to Size write the pattern for your gauge.
