Pattern Lab
Check any crochet or knitting pattern row by row, make a hat or an amigurumi shape to your own size, then work it round by round. Every pattern is checked before you see it.

What it checks
- The stitches each row makes against the count you wrote.
- That each row works into exactly the stitches of the row before.
- That a repeat fits the row with nothing left over.
- Missing or repeated row numbers, and "Rep Row 2" lines that point nowhere.
How it decides what counts
Designers count turning chains, chains and slip stitches in different ways. Pattern Lab tries each way, keeps the one that fits most of your pattern, and flags rows that only work if counted differently. UK crochet terms are read one step up from US (UK dc = US sc), and results are shown in the terms your pattern uses.
Make it. Your size.
Pick a design, tell us who it is for and what yarn you have. Loopwise writes the pattern, checks every row, and walks you through it stitch by stitch.
Pick a design, tell us the size and your yarn, and get a pattern written for you. Every pattern is checked before you see it.
Choose who the hat is for, your yarn and hook, and a style. Pattern Lab writes a top-down crochet beanie for every size you pick, checks it, and works out the yarn.
Measure around the head, just above the ears and eyebrows. Sizes and hat heights follow the Knit Picks hat size chart; the hat is made about 10% smaller than the head (up to 5 cm) so it hugs.
- Work a square about 12 × 12 cm (5 × 5 in) in the stitch you chose, with the hook you will use.
- Lay it flat without stretching. Put a ruler across the middle.
- Count the stitches in 10 cm (4 in) across, then the rounds or rows in 10 cm (4 in) up.
Labels often give the knitting gauge only. Use the crochet one (it has a hook drawn on it) for the stitch you chose. If the label shows single crochet and you chose another stitch, a swatch is better.
Basic amigurumi shapes from a size and your gauge, in single crochet worked in a spiral. Every pattern is checked before you see it.
Amigurumi is worked tightly. With worsted yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, about 20 sc and 22 rounds make 10 cm. Change these to your swatch.
Turn the pattern in the checker into a formatted pattern with your name, logo and colours. Abbreviations are listed for you from the stitches the pattern uses.

Write your pattern in one size. Designer studio finds the stitch repeat, grades the pattern to every size you need, checks every row in every size, and writes the sizes the way designers do: Ch 26 (38, 86).
For patterns that start with a foundation chain or a cast-on and are worked across or around: scarves, wraps, blankets, cowls, cloths and stitch patterns. The foundation grows by whole repeats, so your stitch pattern stays exactly the same.
For a piece worked in the round, the width is the distance around and the length is the height.
