How to resize a crochet or knitting pattern to your gauge

A pattern is written for one gauge and one size. With two numbers from your swatch you can make it fit your yarn or your measurements.

What you need

  • The pattern’s gauge: stitches and rows in 10 cm.
  • Your gauge, from a swatch in the same stitch.
  • The size you want, in centimetres.

The rule of three

New stitches = pattern stitches × your gauge ÷ the pattern’s gauge. If the pattern has 80 stitches at 16 per 10 cm and you get 18, you need 80 × 18 ÷ 16 = 90 stitches. Do the same with rows and your row gauge.

Keep the repeats whole

Many stitch patterns repeat every few stitches, for example a multiple of 4 plus 2. Round your new number to the nearest count that fits the repeat, or the pattern will not line up at the edges.

Shaping and length

Spread increases and decreases over the new number of rows, and measure length in centimetres rather than counting rows. Then check the result row by row.

The Resize a pattern tool does this conversion for you, and the Designer grades a one-size pattern into 3 to 6 sizes with every size checked.
